Sundaynight Sun Sals

From here...

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe
Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvaarukimiva Bandhanaan
Mrityor Mukshiiya Maamritat

"OM is not spelt out in the Rig-Veda, but has to be added to the beginning of all Mantras as given in an earlier Mantra of the Rig-Veda addressed to Ganapati.

TRYAMBAKKAM refers to the Three eyes of Lord Shiva. ‘Trya’ means ‘Three’ and ‘Ambakam’ means eyes. These three eyes or sources of enlightenment are the Trimurti or three primary deities, namely Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and the three ‘AMBA’ (also meaning Mother or Shakti’ are Saraswati, Lakshmi and Gouri. Thus in this word, we are referring to God as Omniscient (Brahma), Omnipresent (Vishnu) and Omnipotent (Shiva). This is the wisdom of Brihaspati and is referred to as Sri Duttatreya having three heads of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

YAJAMAHE means, “We sing Thy praise".

SUGANDHIM refers to His fragrance (of knowledge, presence and strength i.e. three aspects) as being the best and always spreading around. Fragrance refers to the joy that we get on knowing, seeing or feeling His virtuous deeds.

PUSHTIVARDHANAM: Pooshan refers to Him as the sustainer of this world and in this manner, He is the Father (Pater) of all. Pooshan is also the inner impeller of all knowledge and is thus Savitur or the Sun and also symbolizes Brahma the Omniscient Creator. In this manner He is also the Father (Genitor) of all.

URVAARUKIMIVA: ‘URVA’ means “VISHAL” or big and powerful or deadly. ‘ARUKAM’ means ‘Disease’. Thus URVARUKA means deadly and overpowering diseases. (The CUCUMBER interpretation given in various places is also correct for the word URVARUKAM, but not apt for this mantra). The diseases are also of three kinds caused by the influence (in the negative) of the three Guna’s and are ignorance (Avidya etc), falsehood (Asat etc as even though Vishnu is everywhere, we fail to perceive Him and are guided by our sight and other senses) and weaknesses (Shadripu etc. a constraint of this physical body and Shiva is all powerful).

BANDANAAN means bound down. Thus read with URVAROOKIMIVA, it means ‘I am bound down by deadly and overpowering diseases’.

MRITYOR MUKSHIIYA means to deliver us from death (both premature death in this Physical world and from the neverending cycle of deaths due to re-birth) for the sake of Mokshya (Nirvana or final emancipation from re-birth).

MAAMRITAT means ‘please give me some Amritam (life rejuvinating nectar). Read with the previous word, it means that we are praying for some ‘Amrit’ to get out of the death inflicting diseases as well as the cycle of re-birth."

One hour of sun sals set to a gentle repetitive chant, the one I picked up in Tampa...
Nice relaxation after...

Don't You Just Love...

Late post… again…
Last weeks GAS was Colin Gilles and I… Charles is still traveling.
Sun sals, standing and finishing. Colin lost energy during finishing… We agreed to do 2 more weeks in the same fashion, then move on to seated. It’s been quite a while since those guys have done any postures at all… Christine is still of course in Costa Rica…

This was the day after our 25+cm storm. And yet after all that work I stuck to my guns and finished off with the Tryambakham sun sals. Though tonight I decided to do 2 B’s every round. That makes for a total of 12 B’s during the hour. Body feels soft tonight.

Loren and I had a nice weekend… rest and shoveling, and shoveling and shoveling and shoveling and shoveling and shoveling… Lamb-burgers for dinner Saturday, we tried the second of the wines from Glen and Heather… quite a nice valpolcella classico, will have to buy another bottle to try it again.

Countless hours spent fetching album art for the ipod… starting to fill out…

Think I’m going to see Roderick tomorrow night. Looking forward to seeing him.

Slight chance I’ll be sent to Italy before the end of March… I so totally welcome the opportunity… we’ll see…

Settled the debate with the folks in our production department… I had made a claim that a new building going up near hw 13 on the airport grounds was made from wood… they all disagreed and thought I was whacked… well a trip to the construction site to take some good photos and have a chat with the site chief was all that was needed… black spruce turns out.

Time for lights out…

PS
Thought I'd have to post this in the morning... don't you just love wlan?

Last Week

Was just Colin and me. Gilles was spending time with his grandson who's in from out of town.

Colin and I worked on his warrior and foundation for headstand. I think he's a chronic deltoid injury. Very hard fro him to put any weight into the foundation.

Wednesday I did tryambakham sunsals at the gym. I've heard that place is in receivership, my days of free practice space may soon be over...

In less than an hour I'll be at 295 going at it again. Relaxation pose is quite rewarding after an hour of sunsals... :-)

The company may be sending me to the lake district of Italy. If it's a typical course, this time next week I'll be not too far away from Milano. Initial web-searches turn up little in the way of ashtanga. This may be the first in field assignment with no access to a qualified ashtanga shala. We'll see...

Loren and I have had another nice weekend featuring lots of rest. I haven't written much about what Loren's been going through during the last few years, and now she's entering a big new phase of a challenging life. Tonight we had a nice dinner at Piazetta. I told her she is my hero, and that I'm pleased with how well she's coping with this part of it. And we shared a nice dessert too. Yeah it's been at least 3 hours since we ate.
