Home Practice

I practised at home this morning for the first time in a really long time. In the past, I've been unable to attain the same amount of concentration at home as I have in a shala filled with other people and their practices. But today felt good. I just did a short practice (up to navasana), but I managed to work up a bit of a sweat (thanks to the roommate's space heater that I had positioned in front of my mat). It was a mildly indulgent practice, meaning that I left out a couple postures (mari D and my most hated posture Purvottanasana). I don't think I've ever discussed my intense hatred of Purvottanasana here. Yes, I hate it. Does anyone else hate it? I prefer to call it by the name Hungry Posture, because, well, every time I do it it makes my stomach grumble uncontrollably. I have a tendency to cheat on it in led classes...I pretend to be like, fixing my hair or my shirt or my mat or something until the second or third count. In mysore practice I try really hard to hold it for a full five breaths, but surely I speed my breath up when I get to it. I don't know why I hate it so much...I can do it, flat feet, blah blah blah, it just really makes me feel hungry!
Anyway, it was a nice, realaxing, warm practice. My hamstrings started out tight (from yesterday's practice) but quickly loosened up. There was a major release going on in my lower back (right in my SI joints) during my savasana, which was really nice. It was wonderful to feel it literally melt away...until I was disturbed by Peter (the cat) who felt the need to sneak up on me and lick my sweaty face halfway through savasana!
In other news, the trusty Fed Ex man delivered my info package from school this morning. Orientation is all day next Friday and classes start the following Monday. The schedule seems fairly good: for the first half of the summer I have classes Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 9-4 (with an hour for lunch), and classes from 9-11:30 on Wednesdays and Fridays with the rest of the day off. Second half of the summer I have class 9-4 every day save for Friday when I still only have class until 11:30. Classes for the summer end August 12th, which will give me a few weeks between the summer and fall semesters to spend at the cottage. I'm starting to get nervous about school...mostly because I'm unsure of what to expect.
Other than that...had dinner with the Actress and the Vegan last night at Aux Vivres (the awesome, local vegan place) that we finished off with the most delectable vegan chocolate-raspberry cake...mmm. I watched a documentary last night about an innercity school in Philly called I am a Promise. It won an Oscar for best doc. in the early 90's, and it was quite good. Today: one last visit to lululemon to say my goodbyes, more packing (I'm up to 20 boxes...doing well), dinner with friends here tonight, and then perhaps an Old School party later tonight....
Three more days of Montreal...

Comments

I hate Purvottanasana! It positively kills my knees! And I struggle to get my feet flat on the ground!Ugh!

Quite honestly, I forget this pose pretty often in my home practice. Probably imbedded deep in my subconscious, I do it on purpose. Because I hate it too. Hurts my wrists and shoulders.
